STILL Sane - 30 Years Later

Picture
Thirty years after Sheila Gilhooly and Persimmon Blackbridge's publication of Still Sane, a sculpture exhibit and book about Sheila's experiences being locked up in the nuthouse because she was a lesbian, the book has been republished.  It is now part of Megan Davies' epic study of the history of the treatment of mental illness in Canada, "After the Asylum"..
After Gilhooly and Blackbridge published Still Sane and did book tours with it, they discovered that the audiences were full of lesbians who  had themselves been locked up - and had often never told the story to anyone.
Check out this lesbian classic.

Becca Plucer directed a great documentary which looks at the history of queer rights through the lens of my life.
It has been shown on OUT TV, at the Rio Theatre, and at festivals in Montreal, Nelson and Victoria, and most recently at the Queer Film Festival.
The movie includes the ever-fabulous and courageous Vancouver activists whom I have had the honour to work with to move our rights forward:
Barbara Bell, Sandy Leo Laframboise, Kimberly Nixon, Shantel Ivits, Craig Maynard, Theresa Tait-Day, Sadie Kuehn, Jeannette Piry, Joanne Arnott, Liz Whynot, and Sheila Gilhooly.
Many people have asked me how to access the movie.  Click here for the Itunes link.

Baby Steps #2: Fertility Law Moving Forward

The Family Law Act was amended in 2013 to make it much clearer who the parent(s) of a baby conceived by assisted human reproduction is/are.
It is now clear law that a sperm donor is NEVER a "parent", unless the parties agree in writing beforehand; and that a child conceived by ART (sperm, egg donation +/- a surrogate mother) can have up to 5 (or more) legal parents.
BC is the world's leading jurisdiction for these changes.
The definitive article, for those of you wanting to delve deep into the subject, is "Baby Steps II" by Michelle Kinney and Lynda Cassels.  Find it here.
