Were you around when being queer was a criminal offense?  Do you remember the days when same-sex families were completely unrecognized by the law? When everyone was in the closet because there were no human rights protection for gay or Trans people?

Revisit the history of that progress through the life of human rights lawyer barbara findlay Q.C. and the army of queer activists who challenged and changed the laws of this country:  Kimberly Nixon, the Transactivist pioneer;  13-year-old Tru Wilson stood up to the Catholic school board;  Sadie Keuhn and Craig Maynard, members of the  groundbreaking December 9 coalition;  Joanne Arnott, Metis writer and member of A.W.A.R.E;  Sandy Leo Laframboise and Deborah Brady, the earliest Vancouver trans activists and founders of the High Risk Society; Shantel Ivits, of the Safer Schools Coalition and Catherine White Holman Wellness Centre; and elder Jeannette Piry who faced homophobia as her partner of 50 years was dying. Hear about the early days from Liz Whynot, Barb Bell, and Sheila Gilhooly, barbara's partner of 25 years.

Directed by Becca Plucer, this documentary is a vivid and compelling look at how much queer lives have changed over the past 30 years. "In particular, babara findlay" was made with funding from OUTtv and is part of theOutspoken Biographies series.  More information can be found at outtv.ca.

After the screening there will be a chance to talk with the activists in person.

It's all day April 8.  There is special conference rate for non-lawyers.
Here are the details...

Baby Making: Fertility Law and Assisted Reproductive Technologies

DescriptionMore DetailAgenda
Don't miss this brand new and innovative program for family lawyers, fertility clinics, midwife services, and pregnancy support workers !
Friday, April 8, 2016
9:00 am – 4:30 pm Note late end time!
Pan Pacific Hotel, 999 Canada Place, Vancouver,
or attend via Live Webinar

Rebroadcast
"CLE Summer Series" - Wednesday, July 20, 2016
Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Who should attend: Anyone involved in helping people to create families using assisted human reproduction - everything from home 'turkey baster' donor insemination to in vitro fertilization through a fertility clinic using a surrogate.

The law in BC is very progressive - BUT - the parties to the conception project may not all be in BC and the baby may not be born here.

Learning level: All levels
Infertility is on the rise; assisted reproductive technologies are improving; queer families are having more babies. The result is that many more children are being conceived with the help of fertility clinics, through donor insemination, egg donors, and/or gestational carriers. In addition, the Family Law Act provides that a baby may have up to five legal parents. Come to the first-ever CLEBC course about how the law in BC addresses assisted reproduction.
After taking this course you will...

  • be able to advise prospective parents looking to have a child using assisted reproductive technologies
  • be aware of the best practices and checklists for drafting agreements
  • know the pitfalls—understand where problems may arise

Baby Making: First-ever course on Fertility Law

3/8/2016

Fertility Law BC, a five-lawyer working group of which I am a member, is co-sponsoring with Continuing Legal Education Society the first-ever course on fertility law.
We have intentionally made the course accessible to non-lawyers: prospective parents, including queer parents; pregnancy workers, doulas, midwives, and others.
Hope to see you there!

Baby Making: Fertility Law and Assisted Reproductive Technologies

Special Pricing for Non-Lawyers | See below for details

Friday, April 8 | Pan Pacific Hotel, Vancouver or via Live Webinar

Did you know that there can be up to five parents on a child’s birth certificate in BC?

Did you know that if a child carried by a gestational carrier gives birth outside BC, the agreements she signed in BC may not apply?

How do agreements that people sign with fertility agencies relate to the contracts that are required under the law?

Anyone who works in the areas of pregnancy, fertility counselling, or reproductive planning will want to come to “Baby Making: Fertility Law and Assisted Reproductive Technologies” on Friday April 8, 2016.

Fertility Law BC, a group of BC lawyers who practise in this area, and the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC are jointly presenting this first-ever conference.

But it’s not only for lawyers.

The course is aimed at anyone involved in fertility issues, birth and post-birth support: doctors, nurses, pregnancy counsellors, midwives, doulas, and fertility counselors.

The goal of the day is for people involved with parenting by assisted human reproduction (and that’s everything from sperm donation to IVF) to understand how the law affects them as professionals, the intended parents, and anyone else involved!

Special non-lawyer pricing:
$310 (Early Bird Pricing)
$345 after March 18

Happy IWD

Nellie McClung said it best:  Never retract, never retreat, never apologize.  Get the job done and let them howl!    Let us collectively and individually, to making them how:  about the scandalous mistreatment of murdered and missing women, about benefits for women with disabilities, about the relief of child poverty, about First Nations women who lose their children to MCFD in a current-day version of the sixties scoop; for housing for First Nations women and their families in the north,  for FOOD for people living north of 60...
for women who are sex trade workers, or undocumented, or enslaved immigrant women forced to work underground. For transwomen, binary and nonbinary,  who lack medical care and face bigotry trying to access it.   For lesbian moms trying to conceive in the face of legalized discrimination about access to donor sperm.  For every woman.  For every sister.  For every daughter.  For all of us.
Happy International Women's Day.
