Nova Scotia Court Sides with TWU

The trial level court of Nova Scotia decided today that the Nova Scotia Barristers Society did not have the authority to decide that graduates of TWU would not be licensed to practise in Nova Scotia.

The Barristers Society rejected TWU's application to have its graduate be eligible to practise in Nova Scotia because TWU requires its students to sign a discriminatory covenant that they will not have sex except if they are in a HETEROSEXUAL marriage.

This is the first court decision of the several that are pending country-wide. It is almost certainly going to be appealed.

Great Resources for Trans Parents

The LGBTQ Parenting Network in Toronto http://lgbtparentingnetwork.ca, led by the fabulous Rachel Epstein, has produced some great resources for trans parents.
Though the legal aspects relate specifically to Ontario, the materials are very useful.

Is Sperm Property?

The B.C. Court of Appeal has decided that sperm is property...at least sometimes. In a decision released this month the Court considered an action brought by men who had stored their sperm in a sperm bank at UBC. The freezer in which the sperm was stored lost power and the sperm were damaged. The question was whether UBC was liable under the Warehouse Receipt Act ...and the answer depended on whether sperm was or was not "goods" covered by that law. The Court's answer: yes, for the purposes of this lawsuit, sperm is property. But the Court was careful to say they might come to a different conclusion if the issue came up in a different context such as assisted reproduction. (Lam UBC 2015 BCCA 2)
